The work in nine chapters elaborately deals with the concept of sapa and its evolution from the Vedic period. It also deals with topics such as the concept of the power of words, metamorphosis, curse, and low birth, causes of the curse, and the definition of the curse and its classification, closely related to curse is the phenomenon of blessings/boons, All these are analyzed in the light of modern historical and anthropological studies. Several seemingly insignificant stories of the Mahabharata acquire new importance and role when viewed from the point of view of the phenomenon of curse giving new dimensions for the epic-stories.
